What is Gender?

A noun that denotes male or female is called gender. Below are the four main types:

  • Masculine Gender: Names a male (e.g., man, boy, king).
  • Feminine Gender: Names a female (e.g., woman, girl, queen).
  • Common Gender: Can denote both male or female (e.g., teacher, doctor, student).
  • Neuter Gender: Denotes neither male nor female (usually non-living things e.g., chair, fan, house).

Tip: To remember pairs, use flashcards and read aloud: say the masculine and then the feminine. Make it fun — use drawings, stickers and praise!
